weekly update

Reading each others' informational books.

 WRITING:

The second graders finished their non-fiction pieces! They had to choose one of their two finished stories to have their classmates read. After they read they offered a compliment or a suggestion. These suggestions sparked some conversations and some editing!  The second graders then turned in one book and brought the other one home! Over break I will spend time grading these informational books. I've read a lot of parts of all of them, but not one have I read all the way through. I'm excited to read them as a finished pieces and see how much the kids have have grown as writers. The plan for next week is to do some fun holiday-themed writing.

MATH:

We are working on adding two-digit numbers, skip counting, and graphs. I am continually impressed with how this math program has the second graders doing math and moving them forward through games and play. The students are getting a great foundation in number sense, place value, and how groups of 10 and 100 work. When they do start doing more paper and pencil work they are going to be so ready for it!

READING:

Next week we will continue to highlight word endings. Knowing common suffixes (and prefixes too) helps the second graders recognize words easier adn helps them build fluency!

PHONICS:

In addition to working on word endings we have wrapped up our unit on extra tricky high frequency words - though we continue to study them daily. Your second grader should have brought home a baggie of words on cards. Those are the words we used to build the Wordle we played in class. You can play at home too! Get out those word cards and click here: Wordle

SEL:

We finished learning about the word rejected, and know some strategies that will help us if we ever feel left out and rejected. We also know to always include others, since it never feels good to be left out.

HOMEWORK:

The math homework is due by Friday, December 22.

EXTRA INFORMATION:

A note from Miss T, our student teacher:

Second grade families,
Thank you so so much for the gifts and all of your support throughout my time in your child’s classroom! I have been lucky enough to come visit Mrs Chambers room many times since moving on to my Preschool placement and it is always the highlight of my week. I will forever be grateful for my experience in 2nd grade and will never forget just how amazing and fun your kiddos are!
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!
All the best, Miss T :)
