weekly update

Miss T's last day was Friday! We were all sad to see her go, but she is headed to the ECC, so we are hoping we will be able to keep tabs and get her back to Park somehow! Thanks to your generosity the class gave her a $50 Amazon giftcard and 6 sets of the Better Together plushies that she loves!

Pies:

Thanks to everyone for helping out with pie making! This is such a fun service project and a great community builder for the second graders. Each second grader measured out the dry ingredients, so we even snuck some math in there! Your support, sending in ingredients, coming in to set up and assemble pies, and helping your child brainstorm their pie's recipient are all essential in making a project like this one possible. Thank you!

Writing:

We are finishing our first non-fiction pieces next week! The second graders will be putting on the finishing touches by adding a glossary, a table of contents and a conclusion. Then we will add these books to our classroom library for our classmates to read!

Math:

We are nearing the end of our unit with time and measurement. I think. Since this is a new curriculum we don't know what unit is coming next! Next week the second grade team will take the cellophane off of the teacher's manual of the next unit so we can plan for what is next. For now though we will be continuing our work with measuring and telling time! If you have an analog clock at home ask your child to tell you what time it is. If you don't have an analog clock you can talk about am or pm with your second grader. That's almost as tricky as reading an analog clock!

Reading:

The kids have been working on reading and paying attention to details. We read a few stories written with a lot of description and no pictures. The second graders then drew a picture based on what they read. It was good close reading practice and helped the second graders understand the importance of description.

Phonics:

We are continuing to learn from animals.  We learned that animals use tails for a lot of different reasons, so we are learning different ways to spell words with tails...or endings!  We learned that if a word ends with a silent e, we must drop the e before we add an ing or ed to the word.  We also learned that if a word ends with a y, we change the y to an i and then add an es to make the word plural.  So bunny becomes bunnies.  We learned that sometimes we add an s to a word to make it plural, however if it ends with a s, x, ch, or sh, we add an es to make the word plural.

SEL:

We have been learning all about the word peaceful.  We talked about some thought and action strategies to help ourselves feel peaceful.  Ask your child one of the strategies they will try to use (pizza breathing, self talk (I'm okay), closing eyes to think of a peaceful place/person, or walking away from the situation).

Homework:

The homework is a fun one this week!  Have your child decorate the turkey that came home, and make it disguised so it doesn't look like a turkey.  Here are some examples:
