Writing:
This week the second graders started writing movie reviews. Building on what they learned in persuasive letters the second graders made sure they had supporting details to show opinions about the movies they were recommending. We talked about the main idea, and supporting details as the second graders wrote their opinions. We will do one more movie review this week before we move on to restaurant reviews the following week.
Math:
We are learning geometry and shapes in math! So far have talked about how triangles have three angles, three sides, and there are three types (equilateral, isosceles, scalene). There are many types of quadrilaterals, but they all have one thing in common; four sides and four angles. Ask your child to name some of the types of quadrilaterals we have learned about. They might mention square, rectangle, trapezoid, rhombus, and parallelogram. Homework this week is a game that we have been playing at workplace time.Phonics:
We have been playing some fun games to help us with our troublemaker words. Did you know that research says "kids learn best when they are having fun"? We played some fun games this week with our word cards. The second graders brought their word cards home on Friday so you can play some of the games too. These cards have words that can be tricky to spell but are used a lot so we have been working on memorizing their spelling.
Reading:
We have started our next unit in reading, Series Book Clubs. This week we have been learning what it looks and sounds like to be in a book club, so we are all doing our clubs based on the Frog and Toad series. We are talking about the characters: character traits, likes/dislikes, and ways that the character solves problems. After the second graders have gotten really good at focusing on the same book, and having discussions, we will be breaking into our own series book clubs.
We are also in the midst of doing a March Madness Book Battle Challenge! Each day we have been reading two books, and voting on our favorite from the two. We have a bulletin board to show off our votes, and compare our votes with the other two second grade classes. The kids have been loving the books so far! You can see the book bracket on the Park Newsletter.
Homework:
The homework for this week is a math game that the kids have been playing in class!
