weekly update

We said goodbye to Miss Greydanus on Friday with a popcorn bar and movie. Thanks to everyone who sent in something to make it a big success! Thanks too for all the gifts and cards. I know she really appreciated them all and the second graders and I are really going to miss her.

Reading:

We worked on fix up strategies with partners this week in reading . The second graders read their free choice books, partner books, and some books they thought were tricky. They practiced stopping and rereading at the first sign of trouble. Sometimes the trouble was an unknown word and sometimes it was the meaning. I am so impressed with how much progress the second graders are making in reading!

Math:

The second graders have also improved at measuring. This week we spent some talking about different units of measurement. We have inchworm rulers and footworm rulers and have talked about which one would be better for measuring a crayon and which one would be better for measuring a bus. The tricky idea for this week is figuring out who would have the biggest number if two friends measured the same thing but one used inches and the other used feet and then tell why. It can be tough for the second graders to explain even though almost all of them can tell who would have the biggest number.

Phonics:

We have been having so much fun learning how to solve tricky by doing what clever animals do. We sound out words part by part just like a spider builds a web. We also chop words into pieces like leaf-cutter ants.We have been working on using syllable rules to help sound out longer and longer unknown words.

Writing:

The second graders have started a final draft of their letters applying to be a North Pole elf. They are being very persuasive! We will continue this work next week!
