weekly update

It is hard to believe that we are headed into our last week of 2024 but it is true!

We have some fun things planned for this last week with a theme for each day! We are doing a school-wide Spirit Week and just for some extra fun we will have a class SOAR party as well! On Wednesday we will build forts are read with flashlights in our pajamas!! I also have a sign-up genius if you are interested in sending in a treat for that day or for our last day.

Writing:

The second graders have worked hard and finished their letters to Santa seeking a job as a North Pole elf. Hopefully we can get those sent in and get a response before break! Next week we will be doing writing related to each theme day. We will start off with a reindeer day on Monday. Then we'll have a day celebrating snow, a tree day, an elf day and a gingerbread day! Writing is going to be a lot of fun next week!

Math:

Many of the second graders brought home the page we did in class and explained to you all about inchworms, footworms and yardworms. One of my favorite aspects of this math curriculum is the way it gets the second graders playing and doing math without making it feel like work. We have been solving all sorts of tricky math problems involving length. While they haven't been easy it doesn't feel like work because they are about things the second graders can easily imagine and we talk about strategies together!

Reading and Phonics:

We have been continuing our work around tricky word strategies in both reading and phonics. In reading we have worked with partners as coaches, encouraging classmates to use all of their strategies. In phonics we learned a new syllable type: consonant-le. We know that words are much easier to sound out when split into syllables and that words ending with a consonant-le can be split before the consonant. Our phonics program calls this a "word tail" to help the second graders remember to break it off. The program likens this syllable type to a squirrel's tail which can break off it it's owner needs to escape danger!
