weekly update

We had a great pj and game day Wednesday! Thanks for helping the second graders remember to bring in a game. They did a great job playing and being happy they got to play - lose or win! It was fun to watch this great group of kids celebrate reaching a goal.

Writing:

The second graders have been working hard on writing persuasive letters.  They are writing to different people with their opinions about books, and adding in as many details as they can. The second graders have also used a checklist to grade their letters and set some goals. They have been working away at writing valentines too. Each Valentine is like a mini letter, so the second graders have been getting a ton of friendly-letter-format practice. As part of all of our letter writing the second graders have been working on addressing envelopes too. Just about every second grader knows their home address!

Math:

"A penny's worth one, a nickel's worth five, a dime is worth ten, and a quarter twenty five." Have you heard that song yet?  If not, ask your child to sing the money song to you.  We have been working on counting money, making sure we are familiar with the coin value, and now adding groups of coins using both the dollar sign and cent sign. If you want to help your second grader with their math you could put a pile of coins in front of them and help them count it all up!

Phonics:

We have been learning about different word endings, how to spell them, and when to use them.  We also designed shirts to help save endangered animals.  We have been learning from animals throughout this unit in Phonics, and now we have learned that so many of these animals are endangered. So we are applying our new phonics skills to tell others about these endangered animals.

Social Studies/Reading:

We have been reading about the local government, and learning how rules are made, interpreted, and enforced. This week we read about a family that adopted an elephant and the laws that could have helped their neighbors! Ask your second grader what rule they suggested.

Homework:

The two-sided math page is due by February 7.

Extra Information:

Report cards came home Friday!  Make sure to check your child's yellow folder.

February 6- Math Night

February 10 and 11- No school- Mid-Winter Break

February 14- We will celebrate throughout the day. I will send a sign up genius soon if you would like to send in items.  Remember, the kids are writing and decorating valentines in class, but they CAN attach a little something to them. I know some of the kids like to give candy/small items as well. If your child wants to do that please remember that we have a peanut allergy in our room!
