weekly update

Math

Math was all about money this week! We started a penny economy which has been so much fun and a great way to practice counting coins. Many of the second graders still are unsure of coin names and values, but earning coins and spending them has been giving them all so much practice! We played a new game at work stations where the kids try to get close to 25¢ without going over. Any extra practice with coins you can give your second grader at home would be awesome!

Reading

In reading we have been working on being good partners and good reading coaches. We have talked about the encouraging things the second graders can say to each other and how to give feedback to help each other, not just point out a mistake. Ask your second grader if he or she worked on a tricky word with a classmate. Next week we are going to add some social studies into our reading. We will still be talking about how to be supportive partners, but some days we will be reading social studies material. So you will most likely see papers about civics and government as we talk about the reasons people form governments and the structure of our local government.

Writing

We have written letters about books to so many people! This week the second graders wrote to Mrs Stefanich, first graders and and an author! They have had to think about their audience when choosing what book to write about, and they have had to find evidence to back up their claims about their books. Next week we will be writing to kindergarteners and someone at home. We will also practice writing addresses so we can send letters in the real mail!

Phonics

We went on our Safari on Friday. The second graders found so many camouflaged consonants! Next week we will be learning about word endings, or "tails". There will be animals to help us learn about those too!
