weekly update

Tuesday, November 26 is Pie Day!  We can't wait to see your child's special person at 3:15.  Please make sure your child has about cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (6 medium) already cut. If that isn't possible please let me know! Also, if you haven't let me know already please send me an email when you know who will be coming in to help your child assemble his or her pie. That way we can make sure we have enough staff members join us to help it all go smoothly! Another reminder will go home tomorrow : )

Writing:

The second graders finished up their last nonfiction writing this week! This is most likely the last piece of informational writing that will be graded, although we will try to revisit nonfiction in the spring if schedules and curriculum allow. I'm so excited to read these over the weekend, see all the progress they have made as writers and learn about the one more "expert" topic from everyone. Next week we will do some creative Thanksgiving themed writing for the two days we are in school.

Math:
The second graders are learning all about measurement during math.  We are learned how to measure with "teacher feet" and "giant feet". Then we made our very own inchworm rulers. The second graders are working on estimating as well as measuring with precision.

Social Studies:

The second graders have loved learning about the history of Hudsonville. We have studied how the community has changed and grown. They learned a lot about being historians and studying books, old photographs, and other artifacts. The second graders made a timeline of important events in Hudsonville's history including the first Hudsonville Fair, when the Meijer store opened, and when they will graduate! We did take the test for the unit and I will try to get that sent home next week.

Reading:

We are working on reading good fit books, and working on our stamina. Next week we will continue that work as well as read some holiday-themed books. Keep encouraging your child to read at home. The extra practice makes a difference!

Homework:

The kids have an OPTIONAL homework of disguising a turkey so that it won't be eaten on Thanksgiving.  They have a template of a turkey, and they can have fun coloring it, sticking things on it, or just use their creativity.  I will hang these out in the hallway for students to see.
