Weekly Update

We did so much this week! We had a neon day, popsicles for a star celebration, Mrs Joostburns came for a morning meeting, and we had a tie dyeing SOAR celebration!

With help from our fantastic high school football player volunteer (who comes in every Friday!) we made tie-dye socks! Thanks to everyone who supported us by sending in supplies! Each second grader has their socks in a ziplock in their backpack (So check if you haven't seen them!) and directions are attached. Your child can wear these on Color the Park day next Friday!!

Math

It's hard to believe, but we will finish our first unit in math next week! The second graders have done a great job learning how to navigate our math stations and are really back into the habit of being mathematicians every day. Our curriculum works hard to make math fun so the students don't even really realize how much they're learning. So many second graders say math is their favorite subject!

Writing

The second graders area still working on narrative fiction - or small moment - stories. Everyone started a new story this week and we will continue to work on those next week as well. We will focus on adding all of the details and elements that will bring their stories to life. We talked about adding dialogue, description, and repeated words or phrases. See if your second grader remembers what onomatopoeia is!!

Mustaches in phonics

Phonics

In phonics this week we worked on word patterns and rhymes. We wore mustaches that were different from Gus' mustach to show how things can be the same yet different just like words can have the same rhyme but different spelling pattern. We also studied some common homophones (two, to, and to, their and there) and lots of powerful word patterns (ick, ock, ill, and at just to name a few!) Next week our phonics will be embedded in our reading lessons so the second graders can use what they know in the context of their books.

Social Studies

We will be starting the first of two units on family and community next week. We will spend the next three weeks on these units!

Reading

We wrapped up our study of characters this week. To help understand character traits the second graders made character trait self portraits by choosing words that describe themselves! Then, as a class we talked about Katie from Katie Woo and Friends. We figured out which character traits described her (bossy, sometimes mean, usually a good friend) and then found evidence in the text to support our ideas. Individually the second graders did this work with their own books and characters.

This week's homework
Homework

This week's homework is a page of review about odd and even. This is something that we have worked on, but not all of the second graders have it figured out yet. It features a number rack, a chart about pairs of mittens, and a chart for the second graders to color the even numbers. If there is ever a problem that you and your child struggle with you can send it back to school and I can help them with it. Some of the challenge problems are tough and sometimes you might not know exactly "how we do it" at school. Homework shouldn't be a struggle or a battle so if it is just let me know!

Important Dates:

Color the Park 9-27

Picture Day 9-24

We start visiting the library next week! Our day is Friday!

In November we will be making pies and could use some items from our donations list. Please check it out and see if there's something you can donate. THANK YOU!
