Math games area always better in PJs with a stuffed animal!

Writing:
The second graders all finished their first small moment story this week! We reviewed what they learned in first grade about how to write a small moment with a lead, transition words, and a wrap up. Now that we have reviewed the structure of a small moment the second graders will be starting another piece and we will focus on author's craft.
Math:
We are settling in to the routines of this math program, which is not the one the second graders had last year. This program is much more hands-on! The students learned lots of new math games last week and we got a few new math stations. Through all of that play we have worked on subtracting teen numbers, telling time, and working on even and odd numbers.
Phonics:
We talked about how the r-controlled vowel can be super tricky, especially with the er sound. Most of the time the letters er makes the er sound, like in tiger, but sometimes ir, ur, and even ar, can also make it, like in bird, burp, calendar! We also started talking about homonyms and will continue learning about them next week as well.
We also got a new "student" this week! Ask your second grader about Gus!
Reading:
Last week we worked on fluency and that is work we will continue all week long, but next week we will shift our focus to comprehension. We will be using story elements to understand and retell the stories we read. A great conversation starter for the week ahead would be to ask about the main character in the book your child read in class that day.
Homework:
The two-sided math page is due by next Friday, September 20 (Early Release Day).
Extra Information:
September 20: Early Release Day
September 24: Picture Day
September 27: Color the Park
It was so fun to dress up in pjs and bring our stuffed animals to school! Keep the donations coming so we can have a NEON day!
