weekly update

SOARing:

We had such a fun hot cocoa party on Monday. A big thanks goes to our Parent's Club and all of the volunteers who helped make it so much fun for the students.

Writing:

With all of those snow days and delays, we are a little behind where we planned to be for writing.  So we will finish our movie reviews next week, and then start our restaurant reviews.  You may want to ask your child what restaurant he or she thinks would be a good one to write about. You could even  help them come up with some ideas.

We are also continuing to work on writing Valentines in class.  By now, the second graders should have 10 or more Valentines done.  Ask your child how many they have finished.  If they are behind, you can have them work on some at home on scrap paper, and then copy them onto construction paper at school.

Math:

We finished our unit in math and took a test this week! Not quite everyone is finished yet, but I'm going to try to score most of them and get them back to the students early next week. These scores will not be on the report card that is coming home next Friday (Feb 2). Next week we will start our next unit, where we really dig into measurement.

Reading:

I was able to listen to each of your children read to me, and am so impressed with how much they have grown as readers.  At this point of the year, we want second graders to be reading at a level L, and by the end of the year a level M.  Your second grader might not know his or her exact level, but they should have a good idea if they are getting a 1, 2 or 3 on his or her report card. We have been working on remembering and retelling longer stories, and rereading to clear up confusion.

Phonics:

We have been working our way through spelling and phonics strategies for multisyllabic words. The second graders have been doing a great job and really being deliberate about making sure they represent all the syllables in a word. We have come to the conclusion that vowels are very tricky and we have to be careful when spelling them!

SEL

We revisited our classroom charter last week, and looked at the words we wanted to feel this year.  We all agreed that we want to keep Happy & JoyfulSafeCalm, and have a Sense of Belonging on our charter, but want to work on making sure we always feel those words when we are in class.  We talked about ways that we can help improve our behaviors so we can keep feeling these ways.

Homework:

The math paper is due by February 3.
