weekly update

Writing:

The second graders wrote one last narrative piece this week. They wrote another realistic fiction story about the same main character they wrote about last week.  These are so fun to read! The second graders are using some great strategies and really showing how their writing skills have grown through the  problems their characters face and the ways they try to solve it.

Math:

The kids are working on subtracting BIG numbers!  Have your child show you how they can subtract 217-168! We continue to work on problem solving and fractions and have also started some division by using repeated subtraction. The homework page is a good snapshot of skills your second grader should be familiar with.

Reading:

We are working on our reading stamina with longer chapter books.   By now, all the second graders should be able to read chapter books, but we know that sometimes it can be hard to keep track of what is going on when we read longer books.  This week we learned that we can keep track of our reading by asking questions to check understanding before we go to the next chapter.  We can also leave a trail behind to refresh our memories of what we've read by writing sticky notes and leaving them in the book.

Social Studies:

We talked about our best selves, and what we like about ourselves the best.  We talked about how there are some times when it can be hard to be our best self.  We learned four simple strategies to make sure that we can take a moment and not let our emotions take over. We used the story The Big Bear Hug as a mentor text for this work.

Homework:

The two-sided math page is due by Friday, April 25.

Extra Information:
