Pie Day is coming up! This is a really fun service project that the second graders do. The students will write and decorate a card, measure all the dry ingredients in class, and then everyone will assemble a pie to give away. So please talk to your second grader about who they would like to give their pie to. We really like to have each second grader have an adult come to school to help with the pie assembling, so mark your calendar for Tuesday, November 26 at 3:15. If you could let me know who is coming for your child and make sure they have a background check done too I would appreciate it! We have lots of adults at school who have done this with us before, so if you don't think you'll be able to make it it's not a problem at all. We will make sure every child has someone to help them! If you signed up to send in dry ingredients please send it ASAP. We still need quite a few pie crusts, but not until closer to Pie Day!

Writing & Reading:
The second graders are writing informational books about the history of Hudsonville. We are emphasizing using our own words to write sentences about what we have been learning. The second graders have been reading a book about Hudsonville history during reading time. We have been finding the main idea of chapters, highlight important facts, and discovering new vocabulary words. All of our reading work has been directly related to our writing. We are learning so much about Hudsonville!
Math:
The second graders have been doing a ton of work with adding and subtracting two digit numbers. We have used all kinds of manipulatives to represent and then combine or take from them. They are making great progress with this skill, even though it is a tricky one! Telling time is the other tricky skill we have been working on. Telling the time on an analog clock would be great to practice - if you have one! The other tricky skill is am or pm. We have been working hard to tell the difference between things that happen in the am and things that happen in pm. Something helpful that you can do at home would be to be intentional when talking about time. For example say the time and add am or pm anytime you talk about a time. So bedtime becomes 8:00 pm instead of just "bedtime". Many of you already do this because so many of the second graders can say "That's my bedtime!" when we talk about time : )

SEL:
We have been learning about the word peaceful this week. The second graders drew a picture of something that makes them feel peaceful, and then some different strategies they can do to help them be peaceful. We are keeping these in the classroom. That way when someone is having a moment where they want to feel at peace they can look at the pictures and strategies their classmates came up with.
