Weekly Update

Writing:
We finished our last small moment for the Fall!  Next week we will start learning about nonfiction writing.  We will take a "pre-test" and we will talk about text features found in non-fiction writing. Then the second graders will write about something they know a lot about and want to teach others. Topics could include things like a hobby, a sport, or an animal. It would be great if you could have a conversation with your second grader this weekend about topics.

Math:
We finished our first unit in math!  Your child brought home his or her test with the grading sheet stapled to it. This is still a new curriculum and it is our first time using these grading sheets so I would love any feedback you have! When you look over the assessment you will see blue or green marker where it was corrected. You may also see colored ink where your child fixed answers he or she got wrong or where they put stars or smile faces. If you want some information about what's next in math you can click this link to read about Unit 2.

Social Studies:
The second graders are learning about communities during Social Studies. We talked about types of communities (urban, suburban, or rural) and community helpers. Ask your child if he or she can name any community helpers in Hudsonville.

Reading:

We worked on vowel teams and r-controlled vowels in reading and talked about how being able to sound out words will lead to fluency, which really helps comprehension. We also worked on envisioning or visualizing during reading, by picturing what is happening in our books. The second graders then wrote and drew pictures. We did this with our read aloud book: The Wild Robot. It is going to be a movie soon, but we haven't talked about that a lot in class because we are trying to finish the book before any of us go and see it!

Homework:
The two-sided math page is due by Friday, October 4.
