What a very hot week! Even on Wednesday we were overheating so we headed to an air-conditioned portable to take the STAR reading and math tests. The second graders did amazing - with the assessments and the heat and moving around. This is a smart, fun, and flexible group!
Writing:
We worked on sentences this week. We focused on the "who" and the "what" as well as punctuation and capitalization. You might see some examples of funny animal sentences we wrote if your child chose to bring them home.

Geoboards is one of our math stations. |
We did a ton of reading this week! We learned about the classroom library, Mrs Stefanich came and read, we read with partners, and I even got to start reading with a few students. I didn't read with many though, so I will continue to do that as we continue to set norms and routines for reading workshop next week.
Math:
We started math this week!! This math program is so engaging! This week the second graders made glyphs. Then we sorted them by attribute and graphed them. We also started work stations, which right now feel like play. You could ask your second grader which work station is his or her favorite to get a conversation about school started.
Homework:
Coming home in your child's mail is a sheet about small moment ideas. It would be great if they could talk to someone about recent experiences or "small moments" in their life. These don't have to be epic adventures, just little snapshots of their lives that the second graders can write about.

There is also a fun activity for you do with your child related to the story Mrs Stefanich read. Your child is bringing home a cardstock "Instagram" post to hang up on our big drywalled hallway. Your child can include a picture of them doing something that Sparks Joy and write a little caption to go with it. They can draw a picture or color something. Mrs Stefanich shared her example and a blank card to give you a better idea of what to expect. It's not too big, just 4" x 4" and is completely optional!
